Create your own mosaic tribute inspired by Afghan embroidery at our workshop as part of our exhibition "Hanging By A Thread - Mosaics for Afghan Women" taught by Kristin Wohlers and Sandra Sullivan.

Get inspired by the wonderful designs of the Mosaic for Afghan Women scarves and create your own artwork. This workshop will explore the different designs and pattern of Afghan embroidery and take inspiration from the hundreds of interpretations on display in the Engine Room at Canberra Glassworks. Participants will learn how to fabricate a small individual mosaic with glass pieces, known to mosaic artists as tesserae and explore andamento, the flow and movement of glass in a mosaic work.

What to expect
Become acquainted with the ancient art of mosaic in a 2.5 hour workshop. Participants will design a mosaic work which will be realised through the cutting, shaping, and arranging of glass into their chosen design.  At the end of the workshop, participants will take home a finished mosaic work. 

What to bring
Please dress warmly, bring a water bottle and your enthusiasm! You must wear fully closed shoes, natural fabric clothing, preferably non-synthetics, and have long hair pulled back. You must wear your prescription glasses over contact lenses. All materials and safety equipment for this class will be provided. 

What will you make
A finished 20 x 10 cm mosaic tile from cut class inspired by the exhibition. Come to the class equipped with ideas and designs you want to explore.   

Kristin Wohlers is an Angaston-based mosaicist who works with traditional mosaic media and loves working with transparent smalti. She has exhibited and run workshops worldwide. Kristin is the MAANZ SA representative and Community Arts Officer. 

Sandra Sullivan has been making mosaics using different types of tesserae for over 25 years, and since retirement from full time work, she has committed her time to improving her technical skills and finding her unique style. Sandra also teaches mosaics and hosts her own group of beginner/intermediate students at her home studio in Gawler, South Australia as well as teaching workshops for children and beginners.
